We have moved – www.idiocy.news

This review will be about Safety Footwear, and for European – very unusual safety footwear that Europeans usually don’t see in shops – they have to “hunt” for this type of Safety Footwear.

Terra Footwear is Canadian Safety Footwear manufacturer which was recently bought by Kodiak Group Holdings Inc which is, apparently, Canada’s dominant industrial footwear and outerwear supplier.

Why would you like to “hunt” for unusual Safety Footwear that you can’t buy in your local shop? Because they are a bit special and offer you more than the ones in local shops, and you have only one set of feet so better be wise where you keep them…

Terra Spider Safety Trainer.

Certifications according to what is actually on product itself :

  • Green Triangle indicates that it is a class 1 toe cap with puncture resistant sole.
  • Yellow Square (with SD) indicates anti-static protection.

What is so special about these Safety Trainers?

Apart from marketing and certification “stuff” the main Two advantages are:

  • Your feet will not stink, or will stink significantly less if you’re unusually stinky person… because of CleanFeet® technology Terra Footwear uses.
  • Metal FREE – these trainers are very light and if you work in airport or any similar high security site that requires regular metal detector walk-through this “gadget” will keep you way ahead of other colleagues.
  • Heel cushion material Terra Footwear uses for most of their products seems to be very nice and soft – if you have experienced soar heel back because or rubbing against uncomfortable heel cushion material you might understand what we are about on this one.

What are they good for?

  • If you are in a job that requires a mix of driving and technical repairs or installations.
  • If you are in a job that requires Safety Footware but is not very “hardcore” job – diggers and riggers probably are not the target category for this product.

These Safety Trainers will suit someone who would love to wear his trainers at work, but is not allowed to do so because of Health & Safety regulations.

Also these Safety Trainers will not be suitable for Factory or Electrician jobs because they are have only anti-static protection and they don’t qualify for full electrical protection – for that purpose Terra Footwear have different models.

The design of this particular model has wide front part so it will be suitable for people with big – wide feet, the protective toe-cap is still there but part behind it is quite wide.

This combination of wide trainer, CleanFeet® technology and metal free design might be suitable for Truck Drivers who might be required to wear Safety Footwear, but in the same time comfort and movement in low risk environment.

Terra built quality – Wear & Tear.

Terra Spider Safety Trainers have very soft heel cushioning and it’s very comfortable, but after 6 month of all week use at work cushioning will start to wear out – it’s not built to last forever, it’s built to provide comfort at work all day long.

Outsole will maintain grip for very long time and probably will outlast other parts of the trainer, even after 6 month of intensive use there are no signs of wear on outsole.

Water resistance if quite good, better than for cheaper models for sure, but not perfect – after half a day in heavy rain or wet grass you will start to feel wetness coming through leather upper.

Slip resistance is quite good, haven’t tested on ice, but on wet surfaces holds grip very well compare to other footwear we have used.

The Bad

Not very popular, hard to find a place to try on before buying and only few online shops sell these, at least outside North America.

Cushioning around heel area is comfortable, but won’t last longer than a year in regular 12h /5day a week use cycle.

Sole is not very thick – trainers are good for everyday walking and driving, but not very good for running or jumping, if your work involves a lot of fast-moving, occasional running and jumping heel will start to feel tired after a while. Could have used thicker – more “springy” sole.

The Good

+ Very comfortable when not worn out.

+ Very light compare to products with metal toe-cap.

+ Useful if you do work in area that requires Metal Detector checks as you can simply walk through them without taking your shoes/boots/trainers off – like Airports, or High Security Sites.

+ Overall very well made, materials used doesn’t look cheap and all corners look properly fixed and cut in right angles.

+ Very comfortable when not worn out.

+ They are not slippery, at least on wet surfaces – haven’t tested on ice – sole rubber is more on the soft side than on the hard side.

Good or Bad – price, on one hand its above average on the other hand it feels like it’s adequate. They are not the most expensive ones, and they are also not the cheap ones, but it feels about right after using them.

You can find more expensive Safety Trainers, but this might be like the first attempt in more advanced Safety Footwear – something better than what your employer gives to you and not the most expensive from the ones you found when went to buy your own ones.

Overall good quality, does the job, worth the money and makes you feel different and that little extra something mentally + comfort to your feet.

If you’re interested in Terra Footwear or you are looking for some more advanced than average Safety Footwear you can have a look at some of their newest innovation – Safety Boot with BOA closure system.
